"These are distinctly frightening times-especially for those of us who believe judicial elections should be different from other elections and that it is important to maintain both the appearance and actuality of impartial justice."

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 16  - Justice at Stake Executive Director Susan Liss issued the following statement upon announcement today of President Obama’s nomination of D.C. Circuit Judge Merrick Garland for the U.S. Supreme Court:

“In this heated political season, it is absolutely critical that we work to keep partisan politics out of the process for filling the Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice Antonin Scalia’s death.  The Senate has a constitutional duty to provide advice and consent in this process, and we expect the Senate to do its job and fulfill that obligation.

“We have seen an alarming trend toward politicized judicial selection in all our courts, from the states to Washington, D.C. Respect for the Supreme Court must not be compromised by partisan wrangling. The stakes are too high.”

“As Chief Justice Roberts wrote in an opinion last year, ‘The judiciary's authority … depends in large measure on the public's willingness to respect and follow its decisions. Public trust in our courts is crucial for a society governed by the rule of law, and that trust can only be maintained when courts are insulated from partisan political influence.’”
