"These are distinctly frightening times-especially for those of us who believe judicial elections should be different from other elections and that it is important to maintain both the appearance and actuality of impartial justice."

Justice at Stake Receives Two Grants to Support Nonpartisan Fair-Courts Work

$2.4 Million in Grants Awarded by MacArthur and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 8—The Justice at Stake Campaign, a national legal reform group, has received new multi-year grants from two prominent foundations, JAS Executive Director Bert Brandenburg announced.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded Justice at Stake a four-year, $2 million grant for long-term capacity building. The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation awarded Justice at Stake a two-year, $400,000 grant to preserve and strengthen the fairness, impartiality and transparency of the court system.

“As the threat to our courts grows, America’s leading foundations are stepping forward to support the fair-courts movement,” Brandenburg said. “They know that impartial justice is a mainstream American value.”

Justice at Stake is a nonpartisan, nonprofit campaign working to keep America’s courts fair and impartial. Justice at Stake and its 50-plus state and national partners educate the public, and work for reforms to keep politics and special interests out of the courtroom—so that judges can protect our Constitution, our rights and the rule of law.

The Gates Foundation grant will help Justice at Stake develop an individual gifts program, build a national network of fair-courts supporters, and invest in professional development across the fair-courts field.

The MacArthur Foundation grant was one of nine grants awarded to support campaign finance research, information sharing, and efforts to improve election processes.  Four of Justice at Stake’s national campaign partners also received MacArthur grants. Other recipient groups include the Brennan Center for Justice, the Campaign Legal Center, the Committee for Economic Development, and the National Institute on Money in State Politics.
